Most people book a dolphin tour in Guanacaste hoping to catch a glimpse of one or two dolphins in the distance. What they don't expect is a pod of twenty playing at the bow of the boat for thirty minutes straight, leaping out of the water three meters ahead while the Costa Rican coastline slides past in the background.

That's the thing about a dolphin tour on the Gold Coast. The dolphins show up. And when they do, everything else stops.

But dolphins are just the beginning. The waters along Guanacaste’s Pacific coast are home to an incredible variety of marine life. On a single sailing trip with Mowana, you can go from a dolphin encounter at the bow to snorkeling with sea turtles, spotting a stingray resting on the sand, and watching the sun drop into the Pacific from the deck of a private trimaran. All in the same afternoon.

Here is everything you might encounter on a dolphin tour in Guanacaste, season by season.

Dolphins — The Stars of Every Trip

Several dolphin species frequent the waters off Guanacaste. The most commonly spotted are the common bottlenose dolphin and the pantropical spotted dolphin, both highly social and naturally curious about boats under sail.

Their behavior at the bow is called bow-riding. The pressure wave created by a moving vessel gives them free propulsion, and they use it for play, surfing the wave, accelerating, jumping, and occasionally rolling sideways to look up at the people watching from the trampoline nets above. It is one of the few wild animal encounters where the animal is as interested in you as you are in it.

Dolphin sightings are possible year-round on our tours. From our experience sailing the Guanacaste coast, December through April often offers excellent conditions for spotting them, with generally calmer seas and good visibility making pods easier to see from a distance. Groups can range from just a few dolphins to pods of thirty or more.

When dolphins appear, Captain Jean-Luc adapts the course and gives them space, allowing the encounter to unfold naturally without chasing or disturbing them.

No guarantees — they are wild animals. But in over 30 years of sailing this coastline, Captain Jean-Luc has learned exactly where they tend to appear, and he navigates accordingly.

Sea Turtles — The Most Moving Encounter

A dolphin tour in Guanacaste often turns into a turtle encounter without anyone planning it. Five species of sea turtle frequent Costa Rican waters. From the open sea, the most commonly spotted are the hawksbill, the green turtle, and the leatherback.

They surface to breathe every few minutes, and that is usually how you spot them: a head breaking the surface, a slow exhale, then gone. During snorkeling stops, it is not unusual for a turtle to swim past at arm's length, completely unbothered, following its own route along the reef.

Sea turtles can be encountered in Guanacaste waters throughout the year, although their presence and activity vary depending on the species and season. From the deck of Mowana, we occasionally spot turtles surfacing for air, and during snorkeling stops you may be lucky enough to see one swimming quietly beneath the surface.

Guanacaste is also home to important sea turtle nesting areas, with different species nesting at different times of the year.

On board Mowana, the rule is simple: we observe from a respectful distance, we never approach, and we never touch.

Rays — Spotted Eagle Rays and More

Spotted eagle rays are among the most spectacular rays we encounter along the Guanacaste coast.

Easily recognized by their dark backs covered in white spots and their long tails, they seem to fly effortlessly through the water.

They can sometimes be spotted from the deck of Mowana or while snorkeling in the clear waters around our anchoring spots.

Like all wildlife encounters on our sailing tours, sightings are never guaranteed — and that is exactly what makes seeing one so special.

Humpback Whales — The Offshore Spectacle

Humpback whales are seasonal visitors to the Guanacaste coast. From December through April, whales migrating from the North Pacific can be spotted in the warmer waters of northern Costa Rica, where they come to mate, give birth and care for their calves.

Seeing a humpback whale from Mowana is always an exceptional moment.

Sometimes it is a distant blow on the horizon; other times, with a little luck, we may see a whale breach or a mother traveling with her calf.

As with all wildlife encounters, sightings are never guaranteed.

Tropical Fish — What Waits Underwater

Every sailing tour with Mowana includes the opportunity for a snorkeling stop, and that is where another side of Guanacaste’s marine life reveals itself.

The rocky reefs and coastal waters around Playa del Amor, Las Catalinas and Bahía Potrero are home to a variety of tropical marine life.

Depending on the conditions and the day, you may encounter colorful reef fish, parrotfish, pufferfish, moray eels, octopuses and other species hiding among the rocks or swimming through the clear Pacific water.

Snorkeling gear is included on every tour. If you are not a confident swimmer, life jackets are available so you can float comfortably and observe the underwater world from the surface.

When to Book Your Dolphin Tour in Guanacaste

Every season offers a different experience when sailing from Playa Flamingo, and dolphins may be encountered throughout the year.

December to April — dry season: Generally calmer conditions and excellent visibility make this a particularly enjoyable time for sailing, snorkeling and spotting marine life. Humpback whales migrating from the North Pacific may also be encountered along the Guanacaste coast during these months.

May to November — green season: Guanacaste becomes lush and green, while mornings often provide pleasant conditions for sailing. Dolphins, rays, sea turtles and tropical marine life may still be encountered, although wildlife sightings always vary from one trip to another.

Year-round: Dolphins and a variety of tropical marine life can be encountered along the Guanacaste coast. Every trip is different — and because these are wild animals, no sighting can ever be guaranteed.

Why a Private Sailing Tour Changes Everything

A private sailing tour from Playa Flamingo offers a completely different experience from a shared group excursion — especially when wildlife appears along the way.

On board Mowana, your group has the boat to itself, with a maximum of 12 guests. Captain Jean-Luc adapts the route and snorkeling stop according to the conditions — wind, visibility, currents and sea state. If dolphins appear nearby, there is time to enjoy the encounter without a rigid group schedule. If conditions at a planned snorkeling spot are not ideal, we can choose a better location.

Every tour is all-inclusive, with a fresh barbecue meal prepared on board, unlimited alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, paddleboards, fishing gear and snorkeling equipment. Nothing extra to organize — just relax and enjoy your time on the Pacific.

The trimaran itself is part of the experience. Mowana’s spacious bow trampolines put you right above the water — an incredible place to be when dolphins decide to swim alongside the boat. With plenty of deck space, shade and the stability of three hulls, Mowana is designed for relaxed private sailing along the Guanacaste coast.
