By Mowana Sailing — Private sailing tour from Playa Flamingo

Guanacaste is much more than a beach destination. Along its Pacific coast, rocky reefs, sheltered bays and clear tropical waters create excellent opportunities for snorkeling and discovering Costa Rica’s marine life.
From Playa Flamingo, a private sailing tour opens the door to snorkeling spots that are best reached from the sea.
Depending on the conditions, you may encounter colorful tropical fish, rays, sea turtles, moray eels, octopuses and other marine life beneath the surface.
After more than 30 years sailing these waters, Captain Jean-Luc knows how much conditions can change from one bay to another. Wind, swell, currents and visibility all influence where we choose to anchor and snorkel on any given day.
Here are some of our favorite snorkeling spots along the Guanacaste coast — and what makes each one special.
Playa del Amor — The Hidden Gem of the Coast
Playa del Amor is one of our favorite snorkeling spots accessible from Playa Flamingo. Nestled between rocky formations and reached by sea, this secluded beach offers a peaceful setting away from the busier beaches along the coast.
Below the surface, the rocky seabed provides habitat for a variety of tropical fish and other marine life. During the dry season, from December to April, conditions can offer excellent underwater visibility, although visibility always depends on wind, swell and currents.
It is exactly the kind of place we love visiting on our private sailing tours — a secluded bay best experienced from the sea. Later in the day, the surrounding rocks take on beautiful golden and orange tones as the sun begins to set over the Pacific.
Catalina Islands — Snorkeling Among Rocky Islets
The Catalina Islands, off the Guanacaste coast, are known for their dramatic rocky formations and diverse marine life. The submerged rocks around the islands create natural habitats where, depending on conditions, you may encounter tropical fish, rays, moray eels, octopuses and other marine species.
Snorkeling conditions vary with the wind, swell and currents, which is why Captain Jean-Luc chooses the location and timing according to the conditions on the day of your tour.
Dolphins may also occasionally be encountered while sailing through this part of the Guanacaste coast. When they appear around Mowana, we give them space and let the encounter unfold naturally.
Playa Conchal and Its Turquoise Waters
South of Playa Flamingo lies Playa Conchal, one of Guanacaste's best-known beaches, famous for its turquoise water and shoreline composed largely of tiny shell fragments.
Its clear water and rocky areas can also provide good opportunities for snorkeling.
Depending on the conditions, you may encounter tropical fish, rays and occasionally sea turtles while exploring beneath the surface.
When visibility is good, sunlight filtering through the shallow water makes Playa Conchal a particularly beautiful place to observe and photograph the underwater world.
Playa Potrero and Bahia Potrero — Calm Waters and Biodiversity
Bahia Potrero offers a different environment from the more exposed rocky areas along the coast. Depending on the conditions, its sheltered waters can provide a pleasant place to swim, snorkel and enjoy the marine environment.
As elsewhere along the Guanacaste coast, what you encounter underwater changes from one day to another. Tropical fish, rays and occasionally sea turtles may be spotted in the area, but wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed.
For us, the best snorkeling spot is not necessarily the same every day. Captain Jean-Luc adapts each trip to the sea conditions and chooses the location offering the best experience for your group.
Snorkeling at Sunset — A One-of-a-Kind Experience
Our sunset private sailing tours depart from Playa Flamingo at 1:30 PM, leaving plenty of time for sailing and, when conditions are suitable, a snorkeling stop before sunset.
The afternoon brings a different atmosphere to the water. As the sun begins to descend toward the Pacific, the light gradually becomes warmer, transforming both the coastline and the experience on board.
After snorkeling, we raise anchor and continue sailing as sunset approaches. From Mowana's spacious deck and giant trampolines, you can relax with a drink in hand and watch the Guanacaste sky turn shades of gold, orange and red over the Pacific.
Why a Private Sailing Tour Changes Everything

The difference between a shared snorkeling excursion and a private sailing tour from Playa Flamingo is noticeable from the moment you step aboard.
Mowana is reserved exclusively for your group, with a maximum of 12 guests.
Captain Jean-Luc chooses the snorkeling spot according to the conditions on the day, taking into account visibility, currents, wind and sea conditions. There is no rigid itinerary — the goal is to choose the best possible experience for your group.
You have time to relax and enjoy the water at your own pace. Snorkeling equipment is included, and life jackets are available for guests who prefer additional support while exploring from the surface.
Every Mowana tour is all-inclusive, with a fresh barbecue meal prepared on board, unlimited alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, paddleboards, fishing gear and snorkeling equipment. Everything is included so you can simply enjoy your time sailing along the Guanacaste coast.
The Best Conditions for Snorkeling in Guanacaste
The dry season, from December to April, generally offers excellent conditions for snorkeling along the Guanacaste coast, with less rainfall and often good underwater visibility. As always, conditions can vary depending on wind, swell and currents.
The green season, from May to November, offers a different experience. Guanacaste becomes lush and green, and mornings can provide pleasant conditions for sailing and snorkeling. Marine life can be encountered throughout the year, so every trip offers the possibility of a different experience beneath the surface.
At Mowana, we adapt each trip to the actual conditions of the day. If a planned snorkeling spot is not suitable, Captain Jean-Luc can choose another location. After more than 30 years sailing these waters, local knowledge makes a real difference when deciding where to anchor and snorkel.
